You may call Emmetsburg’s lack of services a problem, I’m calling it an opportunity.
Our family moved back to Emmetsburg from Minneapolis shortly after the birth of our oldest son. I started a massage therapy practice almost immediately and can say with confidence that there is no better place to run a small business. Even without the financial aid that is now available to many new business owners, our practice saw swift and significant growth.
What kind of businesses would do well here?
A very informal survey (me + beer + friends = informal survey) concludes that some of the services needed in our community are: youth tumbling and dance classes, grocery store, coffee shop, outdoor recreations sales and equipment and/or bait shop, extended hours gym, bowling alley, urgent care/minute clinic, and home health care for seniors.
Not into the service industry? Emmetsburg is always in need of other professionals such as lawyers, doctors, veterinarians, agricultural and ag business and engineering professionals, housing developers, plumbers, hair stylists and massage therapists to name a few.
Seriously, if you have a trade or a job, you have a potential career in Emmetsburg.
Still not convinced? Here’s a short list of some of the best reasons to live, work and play in Emmetsburg, IA.
Five Island Lake
Stunning. Fun. Tranquil. I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves. It’s perfect every season.
We were rated one of the safest communities in Iowa. That makes us one of the safest towns in one of the safest states in the nation. Now, I’m not saying we’re Mayberry, but kids here get to do crazy things like walk to school, ride their bikes to the park, and drop into neighbor’s homes without fear. That’s freaking awesome parents.
Our son is entering first grade at the local public elementary school and I could not be more impressed with his incredible teachers. Emmetsburg also offers the option of private instruction in Emmetsburg Catholic School’s k-8 program and our high school was rated one of the top schools in Iowa by US News and World Report.
Is farm living the life for you? Check out these photos by Kristal Theesfeld from Rustic Shores. If you want to grow it or raise it, you can probably do it here. I mean unless you’re looking into orange groves or something.
We left Minneapolis after our oldest son was born, mainly due to the high cost of living. Between housing and daycare there wasn’t much left. So we moved to Emmetsburg, bought a four bedroom house within walking distance of both a lake and a golf course and started living the dream.
Now, in addition to the already affordable home prices, Emmetsburg offers grants ranging from $5,000- $15,000 to purchase or build homes, and $5,000 to demolish old structures. The options are endless.
St. Patrick’s Day
I wouldn’t be a good Irishman if this didn’t make the list. Emmetsburg is consistently listed as one of the top places in the country to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. In the entire country people! Check out details in Chicago magazine here or just google that shit. We own the internet on this one.
I picked out some of my favorites from the talented Brook Hyenga to highlight this year’s parade, but you really need to check out the entire post at Donyelle Brooke Photography.
I know I’m missing more than a few amazing things about this community, so please comment and leave photos below letting everyone know why Emmetsburg is the best place to live!
